讲座内容：

Assortative matching (AM) can be an effective means to facilitate proliferation of cooperation. In a simple population dynamic model of prisoners’ dilemma, increasing assortativity induces higher level of cooperation for the mixed-type equilibrium but shrinks the basin of attraction for the pure defection equilibrium. In a controlled lab experiment, we empirically confirm the implied hypothesis that manipulating the initial population state by adding cooperative dummies may significantly improve the chance of higher level cooperation, compared to both the random matching setup and the assortative one without dummies. Matching to the above theoretical and lab results, we find the novel evidence that Confucianism explicitly encourages people to behave in manners that facilitate the stabilization of a strongly assortative environment that favors pro-social virtues in society, without divine sanctions common in many other cultures. Upon this AM foundation, the continual practice of state promotion of virtues by Chinese dynasties in the past 2500 years may have the role similar to that of the dummies in the experiment, to get the society escape the trap of the pure defection equilibrium. This also may be considered a part of cultural foundation behind the so-called East Asia growth miracles over the past 50 years.
